Cowichan Valley School District (SD79) lies on Vancouver Island, just north of Victoria — one of the most scenic areas of BC, surrounded by beaches, rivers, mountains and forests. English is the first language for around 98% of residents; the region has about 89,000 people and a mild climate (roughly 22°C in summer, 7°C in winter), with a settled community and a relaxed pace. Students from over 25 countries choose to study here.

The district runs several high schools — including Quw'utsun, Frances Kelsey, Lake Cowichan and Chemainus (grades 7–12, ranging from about 200 to 1,000 students). Courses are taught by BC-certified teachers, and alongside academics and a wide range of electives, the district leans toward outdoor and arts programs — forensic science, robotics, digital media, film & TV, outdoor education, equestrian and rowing academies — with ESL support included in tuition. Study options include high school graduation (2–4 years, Dogwood Diploma), an academic year or semester (about 5–10 months), or a short stay (about 3–4 months).

For accommodation, the district states that homestay families are carefully selected, interviewed and home-visited, with homestay coordinators supporting students throughout — offering a private bedroom, three meals a day, airport pick-up and a 24-hour emergency line. The district also organises a rich program of activities, such as surfing in Tofino, skiing at Mt. Washington, whale watching and caving. A great fit for students who love nature, want an immersive English environment, and prefer a slower pace over a big city.
